Wegner Grotto

American Flag, Gold Star

P.L. Wegners Summer Home

This postcard shows some of the earliest constructions the Wegners built, before the Glass Church and Peace Monument. The star represented the Gold Star Mothers, a memorial dedicated to mothers who had lost sons in World War I, as the Wegners had. On the right in the postcard is a low bench for looking out from the slight hilltop at the road below and beyond the trees.

A closer look reveals another of the spectacular pieces of craftsmanship at the Wegner Grotto. The flag has two sides and 48 stars made of tiny glass shards!

The Wegner Grotto is not very large, but there are many small details to linger over on a pleasant afternoon, and it is difficult to head back to the car to hurry back to the interstate yet again.
