Obverse: Grand Mère Rock, Grand Mère, P.Q. Publisher: Photogelatine Engraving Co. MNM#01-01401 This rock outcrop in the shape of an old woman in a bonnet which gives the town its name was originally located at the base of waterfalls on the St Maurice river. Construction of the hydroelectric dam on the river in 1916 drowned the waterfall, but the grandmother rock was saved by splitting it into pieces and reassembling the formation in a park in the center of town. |
